Belasteguin denied Paquito the no.1

For the round of 16, Belasteguin proved once more that he is still "the boss". In two sets, 6-4 6-4, he sent Paquito back to Sevilla.

Paquito Navarro had yesterday an historic chance to reach the no.1 spot in the World Padel Tour ranking.  Never before was a Spaniard able to top the ranking.  By winning the championship, or finishing ahead of the current no.1 team, Sanyo Gutierrez and Maxi Sanchez, he would achieve the impossible.

On the road to the final, Paquito and his teammate, Juan “Wolverine” Lebron, faced  Fernando Belasteguin and young Agustin Tapia.  The match was highly anticipated, with Belasteguin promising to return fully recovered and adapted to his new position on the court.

Paquito and Lebron started the match with an early break as Belasteguin-Tapia slowly fine-tuned their timing.  Immediately after, Belasteguin turned his signature “heroic mode” on to break Paquito’s service once and later again.   Similar was the second set, with the addition of young Agustin Tapia pounding big smashes.  Belasteguin sent Paquito back to Sevilla to re-think his aspirations, 6-4 6-4.

With Sanyo Gutierrez and Maxi Sanchez moving forward to the quarter finals in Madrid, it is clear that Paquito will need to work harder to reach the no.1.  And as for Belasteguin, it seems that “the boss” is back.
